Can I check in Online for a flight departure?

Is it possible to pick up a flight and check luggage on a flight at a scheduled layover location rather than the original departure city it was booked out of?

• i.e. For a flight booked from LAX that stops in SFO before continuing to ZRH, could I show up at SFO and check in for and board the flight there rather then LAX?

  For most airline bookings, once you miss one segment of a flight, you forfeit all remaining segments because you are designated as a 'no show'. I was recently reminded of this due to a flight I was going to miss from LHR-BUD on British Airways (was delayed by an inbound flight with another airline): BA confirmed I would lose even the return leg of the flight if I did not show up for the initial departure. Generally, it only makes sense to skip a flight segment if it's the final segment in your itinerary.
