How do I automate an "automatic start-up task" on Windows XP?
-
I have a PC with windows xp. I want the pc to automatically start-up at a specific time (2 am FYI) and initiate the downloading task. I have 1Mbps internet connection which gives roughly 128KBPS downloading speed. My brothers are always on their phone, using internet, so there is no chance of downloading while they are on their phones, as it will cap their speed drastically. So I want my download task to begin at the moment when no one is using internet i.e. my internet connection is idle. I had placed the shortcut of my download manager at startup folder, so it will be launched automatically when the pc boots up, and will also begin downloading as soon as it is started. Secondly, I had also been able to automate the shutdown procedure by placing a shortcut of a command line " shutdown -s -t 10800" at startup folder. So here is the BIG QUESTION, how to make the pc to startup automatically 2am at night when everyone is asleep? FYI I am downloading Ubuntu 14.04 lts. Previously while downloading it I had paused it several times while downloading, so it corrupted and I ended up loosing everything on my hard drives. This time I want it to be downloaded at one go. Download manager : ilivid Downloading : Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Thanks for A2A. Use Internet download manager as download software. Before putting the pc to sleep. 1)Start the download. 2)Add wake up timer in "scheduled tasks" feature. 3)Select Shut down pc in "Options on completion" tab in download progress window.. IDM has this inbuilt feature to shut down the PC after download completes. 4) Put PC to sleep. your download will resume when your PC wakes up.

Add a schedule task for waking up your computer from sleep http://www.howtogeek.com/119028/how-to-make-your-pc-wake-from-sleep-automatically/ Configure Internet Download Manager to start download after your specified time, also add the option to Power down/Sleep the computer, once download finishes PRO tip: You can configure your torrent client to start downloading from torrents stored in a particular directory. This way, you can download the .torrent file to the folder. the application would automatically start the download at 2am The shutdown parameter you mentioned earlier would shutdown the computer after 3 hrs. So, there are chances, that the download was unable to complete before shutting down. If you are using any ISP which requires you to authenticate before internet starts, such as Hathway, there maybe chances that internet won't work at 2am as there would be no one to authenticate. To overcome this, search online for any Auto connect script. I use Hathway auto connect.

Thanks for A2A :) Some PCs can start themselves up on a schedule; this ability is dependent on the BIOS. When booting up, look for the prompt to enter the BIOS, and press that key. If your PC supports this feature, you'll adjust the settings inside, before loading Windows. As an alternative, set your PC to wake up on a schedule within Windows. Open theScheduled Tasks Control Panel, and open Add Scheduled Task. Click Next, then select the application you want to open. Fill out the scheduling information on the following pages, and click the box to Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish. Click Finish, then click the Settings tab. Click the option to Wake the computer to run this task. This could be an answer if you are a interested in DIY. Get Raspberry Pi or any other SBC and run a linux distro. You can have it running throughout the day as most consume less than 5W and download your content to a pendrive or usb hdd in a time frame of your interest.
