How did you get started in Graphic design?

Can technical folks learn visual design? If so, where and how do I get started? Any tutorials, books, etc.?

Visual designing is all about how well you are able to showcase things. Given a pack of crayons to a digital artist like me, I can only scribble lines, circles or may be some ugly looking things. But given them to an fine artist, he can make a beautiful posters out of it. At the same time if you give a computer with designing tool (photoshop, illustrator...) to a digital artist, he can make some posters or colorful designs out of it. And the same tools may be useless for a fine artist without there knowledge. Its good to read books which will teach you the fundamentals of design and sense of coloring and layouting. Alongside, try to play a lot with clay, crayons, paints. Also try learning photoshop, illustrator, inkspace or free alternatives like Krita. Learning or trying these tools will make you feel like an artist and interests you to learn more and more everyday. Good way to learn design is to start designing.
