You can approach learning visual design from a graphic designer or more from art director angle. The areas I would suggest a non-designer learn (with slide decks): Imagery: http://www.slideshare.net/cxpartners/how-to-use-photos-to-improve-the-user-experience Typography: http://www.slideshare.net/SamanthaWarren/sxsw-2010 Color Theory: http://www.slideshare.net/egiaccardi/the-art-of-colors Grid Layout: http://www.slideshare.net/cwmoad/mw2011-gridbased-web-design-presentation BONUS-- I think it's also very useful to learn how to think creatively, and from other types of medias and disciplines. Art Critiquing: http://www.slideshare.net/adamconnor/discussing-design-the-art-of-critique Design Thinking: http://www.slideshare.net/sylvain/ux-design-service-design-design-thinking Film-making Techniques: http://www.slideshare.net/adamconnor/applying-filmmaking-tools-and-techniques-to-interaction-design Mind Mapping: http://www.slideshare.net/jasonmesut/interactions-2011-summary Follow Design Trends: http://www.slideshare.net/afvh/iq-the-creative-issue-by-interbrand-01 Simplicity: http://www.slideshare.net/cxpartners/secrets-of-simplicity I'm not guaranteeing that going over a few slide decks is going to make you an expert; but at least you'll be more thoughtful about your visual communications.

Visual designing is all about how well you are able to showcase things. Given a pack of crayons to a digital artist like me, I can only scribble lines, circles or may be some ugly looking things. But given them to an fine artist, he can make a beautiful posters out of it. At the same time if you give a computer with designing tool (photoshop, illustrator...) to a digital artist, he can make some posters or colorful designs out of it. And the same tools may be useless for a fine artist without there knowledge. Its good to read books which will teach you the fundamentals of design and sense of coloring and layouting. Alongside, try to play a lot with clay, crayons, paints. Also try learning photoshop, illustrator, inkspace or free alternatives like Krita. Learning or trying these tools will make you feel like an artist and interests you to learn more and more everyday. Good way to learn design is to start designing.
