What does "equivalent experience" mean in job descriptions?

  • Like "BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field preferred or equivalent experience.". How can I tell if I have such equivalent experience? How can I help it?

    Using thast phrase means the hiring company is not as obsessed about formalities as other companies. If you can't tell what the equivalent experience is for a specific position, you probably don't have it.

There is difference between experience and equivalent experience(some people call it as relevant experience).I can explain you with an example. Say you started your job in April 2014 .So you will be having 2 years experience by now. Assume from 2014-2015 you worked in some technology say c++ and 2015-2016 you worked on some other technology say java . So your equivalent experience in c++ is 1 year and even in java it is 1 year. So overall experience in IT field is 2 years. As i am from IT background, i explained this way. Hope you understood.
