Did Herman Cain ask for (or need) permission to use Paul Butler's Facebook friend visualization map on his website?

To answer the first part of the question, I was not personally asked for permission. For the second part, a lot of people have used the image without permission for various things and as far as I'm concerned, It's great. I created the image at Facebook though, with their data and resources. I'm no longer with the company so I'm really not sure how much they are policing the use of the image, but it appears they are to some extent. Yesterday, for example, The Economist published a blog post[1] criticizing Facebook's privacy mishaps. Initially it ran with the friendship map image, but today that image has been replaced by a stock photo (Ironically, I only know that because I was going to use it as an example of publishers not asking Facebook for permission.)
