What audio and video format has the best quality?

What's the best all-purpose web video format with a reasonably small file size and decent quality?

  • Video files would be for content that is mainly a talking head intercut with simple graphics. Needs to be playable in all major browsers and smart phones.

  • Answer:

    H.264 as a video codec and AAC as audio codec inside mp4 as its container would result very reasonable compression and support by most browsers. However, it is not royalty free and is only partially supported by some browsers such as Firefox in favour of the royalty free format webm (with VP9 and Vorbis as codecs). I would like to advise you to use webm, but depending on how much internet explorer users you expect, you might have to choose for mp4 after all since IE doesn't support webm.

FLV is very small in size, but not always the best quality. But I think it's great for uploads or online usage. (F4V the same) H.264, talked about in Mathias's comment, is another good example. Use Adobe Encoder for resizing. It's a professional video converter. So render whatever you want with high resolution and then resize it in Encoder to MP4.
