What happens to orphans when they don't get adopted?

Answer:
I'm notsure the scope if the question. In the United States, if someone is orphaned, and are never adopted, they age out of the foster care system. There are often transitioning programs for teenagers who are approaching the age of 18, to help them prepare them for independent living. Every one has a different story , and though there are statistics, I think the fact that each story is different needs to be emphasized because stereotypes among this population have an unusually strong tendency to stick . The daytime soap opera actress Victoria Rowell grew up in foster care, and has spoke at a number of forums about her experience. I think the age of " orphanhood" makes a big difference. If they are teenagers , many resist being adopted so late in life. If they are , I think it's especially crucial that they are allowed to continue it have a relationship with extended family. As for the questions that are in the comments section: As an adoptive parent, I noticed early on that adoptees and orphans are common in children's literature. It's difficult for the protagonist to be a child and a hero if there are parents there. Historically, children's literature has portrayed adoptees with a large degree of mystery about their background. This is a popular literary device because it allows for a lot of fantasy and intrigue, and the common plot twist of being adopted by 1) a wealthy benevolent family 2) an abusive mean family that treats adoptees as second class citizen. I've noticed this really popular in the British tradition: the Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter , etc.

In the UK children go through various foster homes until they reach sixteen seventeen and if they are not in trouble with the law and such they can go into half way houses and learn to run a home for themselves. Then eventually get help in getting a place of there own and a job.

Many superheros are orphans because it solves several plot issues. * What parent would let teen boy Robin go running around all night in tights with an older man, also in tights. Shouldn't he be in school? * Would Spiderman feel a need to use his new found powers to help people if his kind aunt didn't help him deal with the death of this parents? * There is something intriguing about the concept of the underdog being able to come out on top. (Even Christian Grey was an orphan) I am not an orphan so I can only speculate about what happens to orphaned children. The US uses a foster system. This, in theory, provides the kids a more homelike environment with a smaller child to adult ratio then an orphanage. So to answer your question. Orphans who are not adopted grow up and behave like all other people. Some are mean, other nice. Some are depressed, others are happy. Some are loved, others are neglected..
