What is micro and macro?

What's the best legacy macro lens for micro 4/3?

  • I'm interested in buying a new "old" lens for macro photography next spring.  Currently I have m42 and MD mount adapters, but would consider mounting just about anything on my GF1 if the price was right.

  • Answer:

You can hook up a microscope objective to your camera. Works well for extreme macro pictures (beyond 1:1) but be prepared to deal with very narrow depth of field. A "4X PLAN" 160mm FL objective plus appropriate RMS thread to M42 or µ4/3 adapter and extension tubes can be found on eBay. Check out the following page for a nice explanation of all that's required: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12147 To expand the depth of field you have to stack a number of regular exposures using software like http://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker and a micro-positioning rail or stage. I hope this helps!

Get the Minolta MD 100mm f4 macro.  Although it's basically impossible to go wrong with any make's macro lens.  Macros are usually premium lenses in any lineup, so the lens makers tend to put their best foot forward.

there are many of the 50mm legacy lenses that work very well and would be a great place to start for about $50. http://www.flickr.com/groups/1084614@N23/discuss/72157623679772596/

If Zuiko Digital ED macro 50mm f/2 for 4/3 system is considered "legacy", I'd recommend it. It is also weather-sealed and makes great portraits. But it's only 1:2 macro.
