How does Google automatically measure user satisfaction with search results?
-
It's been noted that Google is constantly performing hundreds of tests for various signals on random users to see if a change would improve their search results. What measurement is used to benchmark whether or not a given user is happy with the results they're given? Is it simply a question of if the user follows up a click on a result with a reworded query? Is it based on bounce rate/speed? Do they tap into Google Analytics data to see if the user drills down deeper on the site they're given?

Answer:
There have been considerable debate on how Google bechmarks user satisfaction for the SERPs. One of the conclusions that most internet marketers and SEO professionals have come to conclusion that essentially Google may use two ways : 1. The Report Link button for Search Engine Result. This gives users the ability to Flag a Result that they think does not belong there. 2. Bounce Rate is also one of the factors that many people believe it to affecting results, as lots of websites these days have Analytics hooked on to them. Also, if website is using Adsense then Google can accurately estimate the Page Views and relevance using data from combined from Analytics & Adsense. However, Google still relies heavily on the authority of websites which is clearly observed from the recent Matt Cuts update on Google's algorithm update on 26 Jan 2011.

Great question. Few weeks ago I sarted solving a similar problem with search driven by Google Search Appliance (GSA). In GSA you can enable Advanced Search Reporting (ASR) to track lot of valuable information like source IP, session, click type. Using this information you can carefully connect a few dots to identify truly satisifed queries. I am guessing there could be something similar with Google Search.
