What are the best ways to find work experience placements for GCSE students?

  • I am, currently, helping a London educational charity. We need to find work experience placements for about three more GCSE students. The placements need to be for one week. The students in question are interested in the following areas of work respectively: law, accountancy, medicine and graphic design. I have contacted local firms and, although the students are clearly bright, they have all refused as they do not allow GCSE students to work with them and only offer placements to A-Level or Uni students. So, I was hoping someone here could help me with my problem. Thanks. James.

Ahh, what an awkward age to find work experience! Not quite old enough to get official internships, not too young to be genuinely motivated. At 15, I was living in Surrey and decided I wanted to see what life in the city was like. I quite simply wrote down a list of 100 Hedge Funds, VC Funds, Investment Banks and Private Equity Funds in London & emailed all of them. By creating a standard cover letter in which I explained that I simply wanted to see what life was like in the industry, that I wanted to work for free, and that I fully understood how it's uncommon to give work experience at my age, I managed to get quite a few responses. I managed to land a 2 week work experience placement at Polar Capital LLC in Westminster. I am 18 now, and by keeping in touch with the people I met, I have since interned at Deutsche Bank NYC & The NYSE. I also landed an unconditional university offer as a result of this. In short, don't be afraid to apply through official channels even if you seem to be too young. People will probably react positively to your age. Good luck!
