Describe the basic investigative techniques used to investigate homicide?

What do game studios mean when they require concept artists to have "basic" 3D knowledge?

  • Many job positions for concept artist and 2D artists have requirements such as: -Working knowledge 3D art techniques and software packages -or- -Basic understanding of Unity and Maya For someone who doesn't have basic knowledge in 3D, I've no idea what exactly constitutes "basic knowledge" of 3D programs, or "3D art techniques". Does this mean, basic know-how to make models for concepts? Does it mean modeling for props? Does it mean just knowing how to navigate the Unity/Maya/any 3D package program? Does it mean knowing how to texture models? or animate? Sometimes, the job requirements are so vague, I've no idea what I should start learning in order to qualify for "basic" 3D skills.I'm also not sure how studios expect me to use 3D skills; for example, should my 3D skills be good enough to use for concepts, or are concept artists sometimes used to make 3D assets? What exactly are the "must-haves" for basic 3D knowledge?

  • Answer:

It means you should know how to operate Maya or some other 3D application. A lot of concept art will be doing paint-overs.  You place a camera on a low-poly scene - render it out, and then turn that ugly block rendering into an image which will be how the title should look at the end. If you can't even operate the camera, you can't do the job.

As a concept artist you are not required to have working knowledge of 3D software.. What you need to know however is how to conceive things that are doable in 3D. You will be expected to understand the limitations and the possibilities of the software used to build your designs. And you might be called upon to provide textures to the team, so an understanding of UV mapping would be an asset.

Basically to be able to manipulate other people's models, (to open the file in Max or Maya to look at it or to render shots for paint over), or do block model mock-ups, but not necessarily to be a world class sculptor. Also to show potential for on-the-job training.
