How long is it until a web page is removed from Google's index once a URL removal request is made in Google Webmaster Tools?
-
80 Wordpress 'tag' and 'category' pages (thin, duplicate content) on a client site were discovered in Google search results earlier this month, so they added meta noindex's <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow"/>, and used Google Webmaster Tool URL Removals on them as well. The URL removal request were made on Apr 4, 2014. After the first week, 83 URLs were marked as removed, and then expired, but the pages were still listed.

Solution: Ensure that the URLs you've requested removals for in Webmaster Tools don't have any extra characters by going to Google Index > Removed URLs > Removed URLs, and hover over the URL links to verify them. If you've copied the URLs from some sources, characters/entities can sometimes be added, and you'll only see them if you hover over the hyperlink. I've had this exact experience with %E2%80%8E (Left-to-right control mark) being appended to my URLs, and were only visible in my URL removal list when hovering over the links, for example: http://www.domain.com/path/page/%E2%80%8E.
