Can you give me any idea based on a funny pantomime?

Is there any chance that a Facebook developer might create a game based on my idea if I give it to them 100% free?

  • I realize that game developers should be paid for commissioned work and that they have plenty of their own creative ideas to pursue otherwise. But what if I just really want the game to be created because I would enjoy the hell out of playing it? If it's pretty simple to develop, is there any chance someone might do it if I expect nothing at all in return for the idea...? Like, basically...will someone make the game I want to play?

  • Answer:

It's possible but pretty unlikely. Developers already have plenty of their own ideas, far more than they could ever make real. An idea isn't worth anything on it's own. Someone here on Quora described them as a multiplier for execution, a good idea with poor execution isn't as good as a mediocre idea with flawless execution. If you are interested in someone picking it up and developing it for you then your idea needs to be fleshed out into a design. If it is complete and actionable, and you have a playable proof of concept prototype (paper or electronic) it will drastically increase your chance of a developer taking interest in it.

I started writing this as a reply to Daniel Super, because he more or less nails it.  Then it pretty much became an answer on its own, so here you go. The hardest part of game design is rejecting all of the slightly-less than absolutely awesome ideas I have and spending my time on only the ones most likely to succeed.  Ideas are plentiful, the ones that even make it through a preliminary design round are rare, and your odds of getting an idea heard, picked up, or bought are directly proportional to how much of my job you have already done when you come ask me if I want to make a game. Of course I want to make a game, that's what I do.  I don't want to take your pet idea and make a game just for you though.  And contrary to what you might think if you send me a message on Steam, my time is not infinite, nor is it unencumbered, and just because I find time to do "other things" does not mean my "other things" are making your poorly thought out pipe dream a reality.  Honestly, it probably isn't that good of an idea to begin with. And if I agree to let you buy me lunch it's because I'm hungry, not because I want to risk a lawsuit after you tell me your unsolicited game idea that is vaguely similar to a project I already have in development.  The food has positive value, your ideas have potentially negative value.

This is possible if you can show that a lot of people would like to play it, too. Try publishing your idea and attract players' attention to it, this will increase your chances. Then it's better to address a publisher, not a developer, with your idea. Typically, it's publishers who pay developers to implement game ideas.

An Idea is just an Idea, but the execution is what matters.. For this as you have said it is highly doubtful anyone would leave their ongoing projects and start working on yours.. In your case, you could create a Kickstarter campaign and draw funds and if sufficiently funded, go hire a freelancer and do as you wish...

Pay them they will create it for you.   Otherwise there are a lot of ideas flowing in the air seeking for execution.   Thanks for A2A.
