Can I create a website, and only a few months later create a company?

• This question is based on creating a startup in the United States. If I create a website, lets say this website becomes known... Even if I didn't create a company at the beginning, can I create a company only a few months later for this website ? I just don't want to pay fees for creating a company until I know a little bit more if users like my website. And a second question that regroups this, if I can create a company later on, can I legally get an income (lets say with ads) from this website as an individual, and then later on switch when I open a company, and get ads as this company ?

  It may depend on the state legislation for where you reside, but you can likely create a site as an individual and without a corporate body attached. If the site is making income, you should be fine as long as you declare the income on your personal income taxes. You can then transfer ownership of the site to a company at a later date. Another option, given that starting a company is relatively cheap to do, is create the company (a sole proprietorship) first and start the site as one of the company's holdings. This open the door to paying lower income tax rates (corporate vs. personal) and allows you to claim the expenses for the site much more easily. If the site doesn't work out, the company is still free to work on other ideas.
