What are some ideas for research projects?

What research projects can a person in the computer science field work on?

  • I'm in the computer science field and I want to do some research projects but I can't think of any ideas projects to work on. What do I do?

  • Answer:

I guess, the answer to your question lies within several perspectives: 1. Approaches to finding research ideas in general. See this relevant question on StackExchange: http://academia.stackexchange.com/questions/5853/how-to-come-up-with-research-ideas 2. Approaches to finding research ideas in computer science. Jim Gray's talk (lecture) in acceptance of 1998 Turing Award, while being more than decade old, still IMHO provides a good framework to approaching the subject: http://research.microsoft.com/apps/pubs/default.aspx?id=68660. 3. Researchers and practitioners specializing in specific computer science (CS) fields of study may suggest you some hot topics in CS. Since this is not my immediate area of expertise, I hope that some of them will chime in and provide you with useful pointers. My additional point is that regardless of the approach you use to find research ideas, make sure you have enough enthusiasm about them to ensure successful research. P.S. I also updated (suggested updating) the question's categories to correctly target the audience.

Why don't you start with that question; at least it is original to you.  Your research question could be "How do graduate students select a research project?"  Never repeat your work, so develop a plan, find a supervisor and get ethics approval.  That way you can ensure publication is a possibility. Supervisors love students who already have a research question and a plan to complete it within a limited time-frame. You could start off by holding a focus group of graduate students (offer free beer in the grad-studies lounge), then create a short questionnaire of ideas from the focus group with an open ended question at the end (what other ways?). Give the questionnaire to a pilot sample of graduate students, then refine your questions and your scale (perhaps strongly agree to strongly disagree), and then send it out to a larger group. There is probably quite a bit of interest in this question (journals, universities, supervisors and students will want to know the answer). You should find everything from original ideas to a supervisor who already had a question and the student was just in the right place at the right time. Be curious, and get started.  Never, ever repeat your efforts because you failed to get approval first!
