How To Start Bookkeeping Business?

Do you need a license to start a small bookkeeping business in Texas, USA?

  • We moved from the United Kingdom and my wife has International Accounting experience. Does she need to get a license in the US to operate a small business?

  • Answer:

The State of Texas does not require a general "business" license.  With regard to bookkeeping, however, it is important to note that Texas Occupations Code limits the scope of activity and use of certain self-designations by anyone who is not licensed by the State Board of Public Accountancy.  For details see http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/OC/htm/OC.901.htm#J.  Your wife may wish to consult the State Board of Public Accountancy http://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/ for details on her situation.  For an overview of the other steps involved in starting a small business in Texas, see the Governor's Office's Small Business Advocacy Page at http://governor.state.tx.us/ecodev/business_resources/sba/
