Why doesn't Google Chrome allow developers to create paid extensions?

These answers don't seem to be accurate. I was able to switch one of my extensions to be paid with no problem. Perhaps they have recently changed this.

Chrome extensions (not to be mistaken with Chrome Packaged Apps) typically modify or extend the web. A likely reason why Google does not allow paid extensions is because it goes against an open web. There's nothing preventing you from creating a free extension that only works on a paid website or paid section of a website, or a paid Chrome App.
