How to start writing books for preschool?

I want to make a lot of money and start my career by writing fictional books. How should I start?

  • I have never actually written any prose or novels, but I like reading them.

  • Answer:

First of all, stop thinking about money. Most authors are lucky if they can afford to write full-time. I would estimate less than 2% of authors ever "break out," and by that I mean make it to the top of a bestseller list and sell a few hundred thousand copies. I have watched many, many, many authors come and go over the years. They sign their first contract, stars in their eyes, convinced they've finally made it. Five years later they are gone. If I haven't scared you yet, great. It means your heart is in this for the right reason because BELIEVE ME, you're going to be working a lot of hours on something that may or may not be well-received by the public. Love what you write because you should only be writing for yourself. Like you, I read a lot before I started writing. One day I announced to my husband, "I'm going to write a book." He lifted his hand and said, "Great, honey, you do that." So I did. You would be amazed at how many people talk the talk, but fail to walk the walk. Write. Write a whole book. No New York-based publisher will touch you until you've finished something. You won't even be able to self-publish until you finish something. There are some great books to read that will help you learn about the process, many of them mentioned here. I've never bought a single self-help book. Instead I chose to join a national writing organization. Best thing I ever did. There I met publishing professionals: agents, editors, fellow authors. I met the people who would later become my critique partners. They helped me with my grammar and my pacing and my character arcs. They are the reason I am published today. My very first book was chosen out of thousands as a finalist in Doubleday/Dell's Diamond Debut contest. Did I mention writing contests? Enter them. You will learn TONS from the people who judge them. My second book made the finals of yet another prestigious contest, one sponsored by Romance Writer's of America. I sold that book because of that contest. Yes, you can self-publish, but anyone can publish a book these days. Self-publishing will not teach you craft. You can't win over readers if you don't know how to write. Period. Write. Watch. Read. Learn. The rest will take care of itself as long as you continue to hone your craft.

Read a lot. Learn tons and tons of words. Thoughts are limited to vocabulary. More you read, more you will be able to write.

Start by realizing that you could spend a whole year writing a novel that might never everĀ  get published. And then, you'll have to spend several months writing another book in the hopes of getting that one published. Keep in mind that even if you succeed in having a few books published, it doesn't mean you will "make a lot of money". If you still want to write books despite all this, then my advice is to buy (or borrow from the library) books on writing. Most provide detailed steps on how to construct a novel and some give advice on publishing as well.

You're unlikely to make a decent living, let alone get rich, from writing fiction. Even with the minority of writers who can afford to write fiction full-time, very few of them will get especially wealthy off it. You need to find a paying job and write fiction on the side. There's plenty of good advice on how to go about writing in the other answers here, elsewhere on Quora, and in myriad books, articles, writers' groups, etc. The handy thing with writing is that it has negligible material costs - you need little if anything in the way of capital, supplies, equipment, location, etc. It's quite amenable to being done well part-time, assuming you have the ability combined with the dedication to finish projects (you'll have to have both; plenty of folks have the former without the latter, and the latter is a bit tragic without the former). If at some point out in the future your sideline is generating enough income to live off, by all means revisit the issue. In terms of how you start right now, sit down and write. That's it. Ultimately, you have to write, a lot, or all the rest of my and everybody else's well-intentioned advice is meaningless. This is all assuming your primary aim is to write fiction. If your primary aim is to make money, writing fiction isn't a sensible approach.

Most writers will never make much money. If you are interested in pursuing writing after learning how little money there is in it, there are a few ways to get started. 1. Write short stories and try to get them published in literary magazines or local publications. 2. Form a writing group and exchange writing back and forth with them. 3. Join a site like scribophile that allows you to read others writing and share critiques. 4. Read. 5. Read books on writing.
