I hate my current job. What's the ideal game plan to exit and find a new job at a different company?

I'm stuck in a job at a large tech company in the Bay Area doing project management (pre-MBA). The pay is lower than market and the office politics is off the wall. What's the best game plan for someone in my shoes? Does sending resumes to other companies or applying on job websites (indeed, monster...etc) have any use? Go on LinkedIn and Network? Tap into alumni network / career services? Start thinking of grad school? Go to a programming bootcamp?

Answer:
Gameplan: Figure out what you want to be doing in 10 years, and reverse timeline. Your roadmap, if properly executed, will be a funnel that hones your skillset and experiences to the point that you should be doing or close-to-doing what you want to be doing in 2024. What is your career goal for this decade of your life? (i.e. if you're in your 30s, what would you like to have said that you accomplished this decade...once you look back on your 40th birthday)? Regarding your sub-questions and commentary: Any company with more than 10 people will have 'office politics'. There's no-way around it unless you want to spend your entire career doing work that avoids any human interaction. It would behove you to research human nature and organizational politics. The first three bullet points you've listed are actions that most job hunters should take. Why would you start thinking of graduate school? What will that do for you? Why go to a programming bootcamp? Do you want to be a software engineer? If so, then why aren't you already one? You don't need a formal job as an engineer to build an app or website. Why would you specify that your position is (pre-MBA)? Bill Gates' entire career is pre-MBA. Warren Buffett established himself post-MBA. Point? MBA benefits are negligible for those who are smart, driven, and have grit.

I'd be really clear about what your #1 non-negotiable is in your next gig, then devise a strategy from there. For example, my personal non-negotiable is an entrepreneurial, proactive, respectful and positive culture. I'd personally choose org culture and skills-fit over title or money in a heartbeat. I know others that value salary above everything else and would be miserable in the most positive, proactive, and respectful place with a salary $10K lower than their peers. I also know others who are very big on ownership - being able to take responsibility and have a huge impact. You just need to know what your driver is. From there, the other pieces come together.
