How good are North Face Jackets?

What are some good ski jackets under $300? Columbia, North Face or something else?

  • I need to get a new ski jacket and am debating between Columbia and North Face. I've heard that Columbia jackets won't last as long. Thoughts? My price limit is $300, and I'm looking for something that's going to last. I've heard that the Columbia jackets loose their waterproofing easily.Update

Neither North Face nor Columbia make the best stuff.  I suggest Arc'teryx, Cloudveil, Patagonia, Marmot or Mountain Hardwear.  Probably in that order.  Get a shell, and layer under it (i.e. not an insulated parka).  Softshell is great for mild days, but I suggest a more traditional hardshell fabric if you're gonna use it on snowy days as well.  Any of these will do the trick: http://bit.ly/gVfYqT http://www.rei.com/product/803468 And an economical choice: http://bit.ly/hMP7Px If you're dead-set on something with insulation, then something like this: http://bit.ly/i0cOl9 I served a stint on ski patrol at Mammoth:  on the hill at 5 am in 70 mph winds for avi control, and never wore more than a quality hardshell with good layers underneath (capilene base, fleece middle, maybe one extra layer for really cold days, then the shell)

I'd agree with Arc'teryx but you might have a hard time sticking to your $300 budget. Also - it's not the best solution, but stores like EMS and REI do sell products that will refresh the waterproofing (Nikwax Tech is one I've used).

I'd have to agree with Jim about getting an Arc'teryx shell. My jacket cost £400 5 years ago and I have done two full winter seasons, five ski holidays and worn it to work on every cold or rainy day since I bought it and it is still in great condition.

Once you know the brands you like, it's worth keeping your eye on http://steepandcheap.com, which runs flash sales of outdoor gear.  I got my husband a $400 ski jacket for $150.  (warning: It's a terribly addictive site). If you can stand to hold out to the end of the season and want to take the plunge for a more expensive jacket, do it in March or April when everyone's clearing out their stock.  I got my Kjus jacket at 40% off and have never been cold since.
