How to get cable stations back?

How can I get basic local digital TV stations in San Francisco without a DTV antenna or cable/satellite?

  • My DTV antenna can't receive good signal as I live in an apartment and am blocked by large buildings. I want to get rid of satellite, and refuse to go back to Comcast. Are there any super cheap services that let me pipe in to my TV (not computer) digital local TV or even basic cable services? Does Roku do this or....???

  • Answer:

I don't believe there are any ways to do this, and I've looked into it. ATT Uverse provides fiber in some areas, but i don't believe they do it in San Francisco. If they don't have it where you're at, they're just reselling DirecTV - which you've said you don't want. When i got tired of Comcast I looked for alternatives and came back to Comcast. If you're OK with non-HD, Comcast can provide a super cheap (price is regulated) basic cable package in 4:3. My TV looks like crap with sub-HD resolution so it was a non-starter for me.

For me, Aereo has been a welcome addition to the patchwork of  services my wife and I use to watch our favorite shows and live sports. We are two of the "cable cutters" you hear about -- youngish  residents of big cities who don't have cable. We don't want to pay an  expensive monthly bill and don't want to be tempted to watch hours of  mindless television. For $8 a month, we've been able to watch live golf tournaments and  basketball games and record up to 20 hours of programs when we're not  home.

DTV antennae are very sensitive to direction. Use your TV's strength meter to best orient your antenna towards the transmitting stations. Not all antennae are equal, go to http://www.antennaweb.org/default.aspx and you can get more information on how to orient your antenna and which antenna to buy. Perhaps you could even put your antenna in the roof of your apartment building. Alternatively, check if AT&T Uverse is available in your area.

Roku does not do this. The only way to get local channels without cable (or fiber or satellite) would be to use an antenna. As some other comments mentioned, you may have it pointed the wrong way, as the correct direction makes a big difference. I would check out http://noCable.org - it will give you the optimal antenna for your area as well as the exact direction you need to point it at.

There are ways to get local stations on the Roku. Depending on what you are looking for in Local. There is Roku channels like NewsOn for your local news. If you are looking for live TV there are private channels that I use on Roku I can tell you about but can't on here cause I can't direct you anywhere with out getting kicked off here. So if you want to know more you will have to EMAIL ME    again I'm not directing you to any website on here.
