What is the difference between M.Tech and M.S?

How worth it and risk-taking is it to go for a MS degree in CS in the US, considering the amount of money needed to be spent?

  • My apologies for a little complicated presentation of facts! I've heard from most of the people that if you're in CSE, US is best choice and more than 95% CS guys go to US. As far as financials are concerned, I am not very much sound that my family can think of big loans of figures around 40-50lacs. I am currently working as a SD with TestDev Profile since past 10 months. My package is ~8.5lpa which I feel is little above average. My job here is quite boring as most of IT jobs are. Mine is worse as I'm in testing with regular workload of installing stuff.I feel like a technician. I'm really spoiling my talent here. I applied for other good firms in development but my profile gets rejected due to testing experience. Also, I don't have much good development work in my CV from college that I can show. I have thought of doing MS,of course, to have a good learning experience and getting motivated. I know that doing MS and coming back to India doesn't make much of a difference in package but that doesn't matter to me much as I want to grow but please suggest me if it is really worth spending that much money for US ?? If I apply for European Universities for Computer Science, which I find are a bit cheaper, are they worth giving a try at all? Also, can we even compare the standards of doing MS from foreign univ compared to ME/Mtech from IISC/IITs ??

  • Answer:

Coming back to India after doing your Master's is probably not a very wise decision. You've said I know that doing MS and coming back to India doesn't make much of a  difference in package but that doesn't matter to me much as I want to  grow but please suggest me if it is really worth spending that much  money for US ? Sure, if you define worth based on how good the education is compared to Indian universities, a Master's in the US is definitely worth it. You're right about the cost involved in pursuing a Master's. It is going to cost you a lot and given your financial situation you'll have to take a loan. If you come back to India with and as you said even if you work at a better place in a role you like with a slightly better pay you'll be spending majority of your salary repaying loans. That's a situation you don't want to put yourself in. In that case, an MS though a rich experience in terms of education may not really be worth the financial set back. Work in your current company and all the while practice programming problems and get better at interviewing. With 2 years experience which you'll be missing out on while doing the Master's you'll definitely be in a better position compared to the one you'll be in when you return after a 2 year MS. I'm not sure about European universities but the admission is relatively more competitive than in the case of US. And an M.Tech from IITs or the IISc is a far better option given that you wish to work in India after your Master's. Good luck.
