How to become sql server DBA?

I am working as DBA lead in SQL server for a remote database consulting company. What skills do I need develop to become CTO of the company?

  • Also I wanted to understand what are roles and responsibilities of CTO

  • Answer:

Here are a couple typical technical career path for the goal of CTO: DBA ==> Database Architect ==> Enterprise Architect ==> Manager of Enterprise Architecture ==> CTO Dev ==> Dev Lead ==> Manager of Dev ==> Director / VP of R&D ==> CTO A more managerial path might look like: MBA / MSIT ==> Manager of IT function ==> Director of IT function ==> VP of R&D / IT ==> CTO In either case, you'll note that a working DBA must develop three new skill sets: A strong, but broad knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of technologies and platforms, how they inter-operate, and when to choose one over the other. A strong set of skills around the development, implementation and management of software and/or other technology projects. A strong set of skills around communications, leadership / motivation, negotiations, and management of people and resources. For a broader description of the role and activities of a CTO, read the wikipedia entry, as well as this great PDF: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/spring12/cos448/web/readings/smith.pdf
