Running Ubuntu problems?

I have problems to watch videos on YouTube. I am running Ubuntu 10.10. Can anyone help?

    I presume you are using Mozilla Firefox to try to view Youtube videos. Do you have the Adobe Flash Player plugin installed? If not you need to go: System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Then Click the "Search" icon in the top right hand corner. Search for "Flash plugin installer". On finding it, click in the box to the left of the entry for  "Flash plugin installer". Then Click Apply and let if run. I suggest you restart you machine when the install is finished to make sure Firefox finds it! Hopefully then you will be good to go!

In the newest Flash update something very peculiar happens on Youtube: a video will run with sound but *without* picture -- however, the very same video embedded on another site will run perfectly fine. Resolving this problem was a maddening process... but here's the (illogical) solution: go to the embedded video which works and right click on the video frame to get to Adobe settings, then on the first tab UNCHECK the hardware accelerator option. Yet another reason to cheer on the dominance of HTML5 over Flash. [If you have a technical explanation as to why the solution works, please do leave a comment :-]
