How does USPS shipping work?

Why don't high volume shippers (Amazon, NewEgg, etc) offer USPS shipping options? Is it price, difficulty to work with, or what?

    Most of the high volume shippers DO use USPS, but most of them do not have an option to select to CHOOSE the USPS as your method of shipping. The shipper will decide which company to use for shipping based on what is going to be the least expensive for them. Another thing is that as a letter carrier, I see many packages from these companies that have shipped via UPS (FedEx, DHL, etc.) that wind up with the USPS to deliver to the customer.

USPS is notorious for a lack of tracking and package information, and definitely inferior to FEDEX / UPS. This becomes a very important issue relating to customer service, and directly impacts the experience the customer has with their orders. If a customer (not you or I, but Mom that barely got her own computer a couple years ago) logs on to find that their USPS tracking numbers aren't showing any information for their package, their immediate response is to hassle Amazon with questions. This isn't a rare occurrence, i ship volumes and have had this occur numerous times, along with packages that i order as well. The other side of the coin is that UPS and FEDEX both have rewards/rebate programs for shippers, probably supplies tons of shipping materials for their huge volume sellers, and their logistics are top notch. Tracking is a breeze, their package insurance is much better (USPS insurance is a nightmare to deal with). Overall just a more professional service to deal with when you're shipping thousands of orders a day.
