  • Afghanistan beats Bangladesh today in their first Asia Cup tournament. in past also, many major teams were stunned by a minnow team. Who can forget 2011 World Cup match between England & Ireland? Share your memories of those never-to-be-forgotten Cricket upsets.

  • Answer:

Some of the biggest upsets have occurred in the World cups as they are the only chance a minnow can have of beating a biggie. The ones in the World Cups 1. Kenya beat West Indies, '96 WC Granted West Indies weren't the team they were in the 80's but they have still got the likes of Lara, Chanderpaul, Ambrose and Walsh. It was the biggest upset at the time with Kenya being the minnows in the absolute sense of the word with minimal exposure to International cricket. It's important to note that none in the Kenyan team had even played above 5 matches till that match. With West Indies faltering all the way to a total of 93 and losing by more than 70 runs it was a humiliating defeat for the once mighty West Indians. Compare this to Pakistan which had Saeed Anwar, Inzamam, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis in its ranks. But a brave batting effort against the fearsome Pakistani bowling and their even better bowling clinched the day for Bangladesh. Ireland beat Pakistan, '07 WC In this match marred by Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer's death, often forgotten is Ireland's brilliant effort to send Pakistan home. Pakistan were packed out for a meagre 132 runs. Mohammed Sami and Iftikhar Anjum made things extremely difficult for Ireland, but Niall O'Brien patient innings saw to it that Ireland achieved their greatest cricketing victory till that point. Some irated Pakistani fans called for the arrest of the World Cup squad. Probably the one match most Pakistan fans would want to forget both for cricketing and non-cricketing reasons. Scorecard: http://www.espncricinfo.com/wc2007/engine/match/247465.html Non- World cup match Bangladesh beat Australia, '05 Most cricket fans of my age would surely remember this match. When Bangladesh took on an Australian side which can be considered one of the greatest ODI sides to ever take guard no one imagined anything other than a crushing defeat for the minnows. Thanks to Ashraful's finest innings till date Bangladesh pulled off a serious upset in the final over of the innings. What followed was one of the wildest celebrations ever seen on a cricket pitch for a non-tournament win. Scorecard: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/211364.html And the greatest upset of them all.... India beat West Indies, ‘83 WC Final India weren't exactly minnows by the standards of Bangladesh, Kenya and Ireland in other examples. But expected to go no more than the group stage they managed to get into the finals with a win over England in the semifinal to set up a final with the mighty West Indies. Even with India's win over the West Indies in the group stage the odds only came down marginally. India was written off and nobody was prepared for the kind of match that took place. 30 years down the line some people may still be in disbelief that the West Indies actually lost to India. Such was the faith and respect the Caribbean team commanded in the late 70's and 80's. So, this match has to top them all. 1983 world cup is remembered for the final in which underdogs India upset cricketing super-power of the time, West Indies. Krishna Mohan Kola has described this in his answer. In my opinion, the biggest upset ever caused in cricket in was also from the same world cup - minnows Zimbabwe stunned mighty Australia in their first ever World Cup game. From Cricinfo- http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/150410.html In their first appearance in the competition, the amateurs of Zimbabwe brought off a bigger surprise than any in the previous two World Cups. The Australian captain described his side as being outplayed. Having been put in, Zimbabwe made no more than a steady start, but from 94 for five their captain, Duncan Fletcher, who was once a professional with Rishton in the Lancashire League, led an acceleration, adding 70 in fifteen overs with Curran and 75 in twelve overs with Butchart. Australia missed five catches, bowled moderately and, though Wood and Wessels gave their innings an adequate start, they slipped behind the required rate against Fletcher's four for 42 and some fine fielding and catching.   Man of the Match: D. A. G. Fletcher. Brief Scorecard- Zimbabwe 239 for 6 (Fletcher 69*, Butchart 34*) beat Australia 226 for 7 (Wessels 76, Marsh 50*; Fletcher 4-42) by 13 runs

I believe I will always remember this. The day the mighty Australian team of the early 2000's were defeated by Bangladesh. Rather comfortably too! You can see the batsmen and bowlers Australia had, Gilchrist, Hayden, Ponting, Martyn, McGrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz etc., one thought that Australia would steamroll past Bangladesh. But alas, the fates had decided a different destiny!
