I am B.Tech in EE and have job offers from Power Grid, Indian Oil and HPCL. I am interested in higher studies. If I join a job and then after 2/3 years try for a MS/PhD in the US, will that improve my prospect of a better job/life? What other prospects will I have if I join any of these companies?

I am interested in higher studies but I have heard that job experience helps, and also I am thinking of saving some money that I would need for my studies and then apply for the universities. Or should i go ahead with M.Tech from IIT(i have a offer from KGP in power electronics) right now. But is this even recommendable to leave a PSU job for MS/PhD/M.Tech in EE? Would it put me at a better place in my career? Or should I stay and try for something else? I have heard that job in a PSU is going to be boring and hectic. That's why I want to know what else can I do for a better career prospects after joining? What other choices will I have if I want leave the company at some point?

Answer:
Honestly, the smartest thing to do would be to do a job for a short while and as you do, contemplate on what really drives you -job or research. This way you earn money, gain experience and insights in your field and also have the rationale to make a more informed choice. Not saying it works for all jobs, so choosing a job right now, that has variety and challenge is the first priority. If you can't find a job satisfying all these criteria, there's no point in settling for one that just comes your way and to you feels like grunt work you could do from the back of your head. Instead, it's better to take the bolder step of going for an MS and seeing the bigger picture while also gaining solid expertise in an area of interest to you. I feel this move is particularly good for EE/comp sci people as you'll see a world change in the very nature of jobs that become available to you as you take up graduate studies. Well at least that's what I feel. If you're going by plan A (assuming your job is benefiting you in some away apart from money) and once you've earned enough and are ready for the next level of challenge/research you would be ready on all fronts (financially independent of your parents- it gives a more grown up feeling I feel) and have better reasons to present right from the visa interview to everyone else who need to know about you. Going for a masters/PhD and being an expert in your area would make you globally in demand and then you have greater flexibility in doing what you want to do in life, giving others the least of reasons to control your career choices, to question you or judge you, for you've earned it! The biggest issue after bachelors is deciding on the kind of job and lifestyle that you find to be challenging enough to handle while not being a burden at the same time. So again, it's not obligatory to do PhD right after masters either. One thing I learnt from biologically inspired hardware designs (which evidently is true for biological species like us) is that your highest potential (reflected in a dramatic improvement in performance) is realized when you have a pattern of stress and you go slightly above the highest stress you can handle and then immediately take rest and repeat the pattern again. In evolvable hardware, this reduces circuit aging by critical amounts and produces extraordinary results. Tagged greater than nominal operation or GNOMO, this is one thing we do to grow - for instance to build your muscles. So a good breather (of a job) after MS and then if you're up for it, PhD would make for a great game plan in my opinion. Honestly, I think there's a world of difference between the facilities offered even in IITs for research and/or MTech and the facilities in an American university for MS/PhD students. The best faculty in IITs would compare to slightly less than best faculty in an above average American university. There could be outliers, but the combo of faculty + facilities +global perspective is a much bigger win in MS in say a decent American university than any IIT, hands down! You choice it is! Wish you all the very best in whatever you choose to do!

Go to IIT Kgp, then go abroad for higher studies. That is the best option. And you can try small projects when you are at Kgp, go for internship to increase your job experience. Thanks for the A2A.

Your job offers are from the best amongst PSUs. For US it helps if you have job experience. Joining MTech in India is advised if you are planning for a PhD and faculty jobs.

Masters first then job....make sure your qualification can earn a better job than what you are offered now. If it is abroad you are looking for then you can choose any one doesn't matter much.

Higher study helps in the sense of getting a good job profile sometimes. If you are planning for a MS or Phd from a good university your planning should go towards jobs in various research laboratories .. Those degrees will help you to learn how to find various research problems , and how to solve those. This will definitely increase your confidence in doing future researches. Sometimes packages are better , sometimes its the same if you join after BE. I think you can go for higher studies and utilize the opportunity . Regrading Mtech from IIT I will say IITs are different from local colleges, you will get a good system, some good faculties , some good materials, and a good environment to learn. Phd and MS are different path than Mtech. If you have a good job, Mtech will only add the degree in your CV,or you might get higher post in the same company. Mtech might not be helpful for doing some thing in your own except some course works, but the benefit is its a guarantee that you will get the degree in 2 years. Whether MS/ Phd will take you through your own work, which is sometime good for your research carrier. So, I will suggest to opt for higher studies but decide whether you want to go for research or a job.If you want to go for research than join MS/Phd ,and if you want to go for a job then join Mtech. All the best. :)

As an employee of IndianOil for 3 years, I would say you are somewhat right about the job being boring and hectic. If you have an offer from IIT kgp for Mtech AND you wish to pursue MS/PHD. I say take the offer. AFAIK, PSU experience wont help you in your Masters pursuits, because there is no significant growth in your EE knowledge base.

Graduated this year. Going for fall this year. A2A My take : 1. Take the IIT-KGP offer. 2. Build your profile ( internships/projects/GRE/TOFEL) 3. Manage well : Recommendation letters , Academics 4. Try for : Top international publications ( not conference papers ! ) 5. Plan well and apply for PhD at good universities Tips : 1. Develop network : through peers / professors at IIT try to get in touch with professors whom you might want to work with for your PhD. 2. If not , reach to out to professors and ask if they have openings in their group. 3. Do well in GRE ( >325/340 ) and TOFEL ( >110/120) 4. Focus on SOP. Talk about research more Don't waste space in SOP bragging about your achievements and other things much which are already in resume/CV. 5. If applying for top universities focus on diversity statements as well. Notes : 1. If going for MS , you cannot save a great percentage from a job of 2-3 years. Go through the fee structure+miscellaneous expenses ( living expenses , application fees , airline fees , visa fees etc.) and compare with savings estimates of funds arising from your 2-3 years salary. You will get this point. So unless , the experience is going to really matter taking job when education (MS/PhD abroad ) is what you desire , is not a good move. 2. Also getting visa is "relatively" easier when you are directly continuing education rather than after the job. I should know since my visa was approved i 5 secs with 0 questions! 3. Often it is better to finish your education at one stretch.People find it difficult to sometimes to jump back. 4. Also if you for IIT now , then when you apply for PhD , the offers that come your way will surely be funded. Less stress on your part , let me tell you ! 5. Education is highly subsidized in Germany but job prospectus not so good in general. You can have free ride for MS and then jump to US. Some risks but is you plan well can work. Conclusion : Admission to US universities consists of many variables . Refer websites such edulix , msinus etc. and try to avoid potential pitfalls and common mistakes. The most important skill here is to have a solid strategy and plan to help you navigate until you land in US / desired foreign country. I suggest you to go for higher studies now instead of wasting 2-3 years in these PSUs...you will not learn anything gainful to be better placed on a later date when you complete your MS...your prior experience will not add any value...You will be better off by doing MS now rather than after 2-3 years of work.
