Are you doing a PhD? Do you LOVE writing?

Can I be the CEO of a tech company and get a PhD?

  • I recently began my own tech startup after I was inspired by some technology I learned about while studying in college. I am still in college and although I was planning on getting a PhD, I don't know if I can work towards both while doing my undergrad.I was hoping to launch my company and sort of start a PhD part time while still running the company. I know this is difficult and will prolong the amount of time I spend getting my degree but I honestly don't care since I know I will love doing it. I have done research in a lab conducting experiments and writing research papers and I absolutely love it. I feel fulfilled, but I also feel the same way about my startup and bieng an entrepeneur. I feel I have the capacity to do both I just want to know is it possible or will people see it as me neglecting my startup. Heres a little bit of info to help people answer my questions. The school I currently attend, the school I want to go to for my PhD, my home and my startup are all located very close to each other so it's not like I will be travelling all over town everyday. And the PhD is related to my startup and it's technology and I belive it will only help my startup in the long run. Sorry I know it's vague but Im trying to remain anonymous. Any input is welcome!

You are very lucky that the logistics seem to work out. I do not have a PhD nor do I run a startup. A PhD is granted for research that specifically advances the body of knowledge in a certain field and is published to be shared with the research community. This research is fair game for use by your potential competition. If there is enough substance to your research that you can share it to make it academically worthwhile without divulging proprietary information from your startup, it should be possible. Make sure to share your plans with your intended grad school advisor though, some advisors might be more sympathetic than others! That advisor might also recommend whom to select for your committee.

Check out a guy named Larry Page.  I think he had a similar conundrum. Turns out he did manage to do one thing but not the other.

You will need your program and advisor to be supportive of you doing both. it's certainly possible workwise as many PhD students do internships with industry. A logistical question is if you will be using intellectual property from your lab research in your company, in which case your university may own it and you might have a conflict of interest with your academic program and university if you are pursuing it, unless they support you.
