What Niche is best to Start with for Niche Marketing?

What is the best way to financially support a niche social site (hosting, maintenance, marketing, etc) without spending too much money out of pocket?

  • We will start a niche (vertical) social site in near future, and we wish to generate a small amount of money to support our daily operations & activities, such as website hosting, site maintenance, and a little marketing activities. What is the best way to support those operations without investing too much money from our pockets? We don't have plan of seeking out external funds from VC and angels, but is it possible to support the ongoing activities by placing ads, such as AdSense. How much money can we make via AdSense per month with 3000 pageviews per day?

  • Answer:

The key drivers in identifying how much money you will make from AdSense in a month are: Number of page views: 3000/day Clickthrough rate: 0.1% to 2% for a content site Revenue per click: $0.10 to $0.25 depending on content If you are generating anything like the average CPM of social network sites which Mary Meeker at Morgan Stanley states is $0.55 CPM, then you will probably generate about $50 a month. But since you are going to get a fraction of what an established social networking site might earn from advertisers, it might look more like half of that or about $25 a month. Find a better job. Keeping a website running is only $10 a month.  In addition, using open source technologies will make everything free. I mean, you can pretty much skip a meal and it'll keep your company running that month.

3000 pageviews per day isn't going to make your more than a few hundred dollars per month. My experience is it's really hard making the first dollar of true profit, but much easier to scale this single dollar by several orders of magnitude.  So I wouldn't invest much energy making that first dollar unless it's directly in your path of making a lot more. If you're not taking a salary, you should be able to fund the operating and marketing costs of your site for a few tens of thousands of dollars (at least, until the point of validation, after which you focus on scaling). You should be able to dip into savings, ask friends, angels, banks for loans, etc.

Bootstrapping is hard. Web site ads are not going to pay your bills (it takes millions of users/page views to make enough to live off). Read the 37Signals book for some ideas (although one of their ideas was 'get Geoff Bezos to invest').

I like the way you phrased this question. Have you asked any of your users? It seems that if you identify your core users they would be willing to help in this situation. Perhaps asking, "What can we provide that is valuable enough to pay for?" They are your micro investors.
