How to give local access to Intranet site in Сhrome?

Is it safe to give 3rd-party script vendor  access to my site's ftp?

  • There is a problem with a minor facebook/twitter scripts that I bought and the vendor is asking for FTP access to my site to check on the problem. I'm afraid these guys will steal my idea, leave an unwanted script or worst, launch a similar niche site. Is it safe or I am just being paranoid.

  • Answer:

I say you could do it if you put in some controls.  You can really go nuts with the controls here. Put the FTP user in a jail with the home directory which is the root of the script location. Make the user have read only access. Put in a banner message telling the user that they accept responsibility for all actions, that logging is in place, that by continuing to login they agree to the terms, bla bla.. Turn on FTP command logging. Literally shadow the commands as being issued.  Yes there are *nix utilities which let you see the exact terminal session. Make sure the ID is temporary..  put in a little cron job to disable the ID in a week or so just so you don't forget. Side note:  go with sftp instead.

You are being wise. Don't give them FTP access unless you trust them. You should be able to tell them enough about the problem you are having and your enviornment so that they can provide a fix for you. That being said, they may just find it easier to get on the site and make the fix and their intentions are honest. Go with your gut.
