Which career Field is better?

Which is the better career path: to join IIT or continue with my current job in the software field?

  • I am currently working in a small software company. I want to take the GATE exam in 2015 and I will have 2 years experience as of 2015 in the software field. If I getĀ  good rank on GATE, I join the IIT. But I will lose my 2 years experience in the software field. Is it theĀ  right decision to go for IIT? Or should I continue my career with software field?. I studied B.Tech Information Technology in 2012. Please give me your valuable suggestion.

  • Answer:

Dots are always connected at the end and each phase of life has an important role to give one a proper touch. So, joining masters after 2 years of job is not at all lose of 2 years. That experience always counts. Some advantages you can have are... There is a reserved quota for sponsored candidates and for this, minimum 2 years of job experience is needed. If your company supports, you can get IIT with even an average score by being in sponsored quota. If interview is part of admission process, job experience is like icing on the cake. Experience also helps one while pursuing masters whether it is performing lab experiment, research or studying something which you've actually faced practically in job. Obviously it makes resume stronger and helps you to stand apart while fetching better company from campus. Things to take care... what if you land in a similar situation after M.tech. and does not get a better job? To avoid this, you should not compromise with college unless you're very confident and clear about your path. You know yourself a lot better and also know the crazily growing competition. Current job should not be left in any case for preparation. Having something is always a better and confidence booster. Make sure that you get the experience certificate from company, so that during the job interviews, you'll be able to justify what you did post-engineering. In fact, as per my opinion ideal scenario is always going for job after graduation which gives an opportunity to get market scenario, experience and platform to apply concepts learned. Once skills are sharpened, going for post graduation is real fun! So, on the whole I think if your company is not very good, then you should definitely go for post graduation from IIT or Some good college of near by level. You may get less salary after post graduation than what you've got after 4 years of experience but Master's degree and tag of good college are something which can help you in long run. While pursuing post graduation, just make sure that you rock that time. All the best!

A2A; The question asks "what is the best way?" and the details tell me about GATE; It clearly indicates confusion, doesn't it? The simple answer is It depends. If your company is good continue in the job, but for a CS or an IT guy it is worth going for an M.tech in IIT. M.tech in CS in IIT is as good as B.tech at an IIT in monetary terms ( just to remind you companies perceive UG at an IIT to be better than that of any PG progamme). I am not good at giving suggestions but things can change for you once you get into IIT. They CAN, I can't assure you about it looking at a few M.techs I have seen at IIT. It is worth giving a try.

No need of second thought, if you get a premier college for M.Tech. After joining only, you will realize how much experience is useful for your work and how much you can improve yourself using your experience. I think its a good decision provided you are passionate about technology and learning new things.
