What to do about my life career?

What should I do with my career and life?

  • Well, first thanks for clicking on my question.I do need your help. I'm 19yr male, pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science.I come from an upper middleclass family in India. I'm an introvert.I'm interested in playing chess, reading books, programming, surfing net. I have a thirst for learning new things which interest me. My aim in my Life was to bring out a new software product which gives me fame and money as well. As time progressed,I thought of it very often.I thought "Is this what I really want?" "Why do I wished to have lots of money?" and many questions.... I ended up learning that my aim in my life is to get FREEDOM.I want to do work which interests me and which gives me freedom eventually.Let it be financial or any kind.I wish to be my own boss.I don't want to work under someone. I don't want to work for someone and earn by bread feeling happy by the sight of sunday and dreading Monday only because I have to go out & work for someone doing non-interesting stuff.Let me point out that I'm not lazy.I always enjoyed what I did and wished to continue it. I hope to do things which are of my interest and which give me happiness & money.Large amount of money only because I want to eliminate it as a factor in my life. What I mean is I want to have money only because I don't want it to influence my life later on.I also want to do things which interest me at the same time. I'm interested in computers, chess, books. Chess-- I won many prizes at district level in chess.Making a career out of Chess is something very difficult for a middle class guy,as it involves a higher bet on both time and money.I didn't focus on this much as a career only bcoz I have another interest of mine which promised a brightful career. Its Computers. Computers-- They fascinated me right since childhood and my interest in them grew along with my age.I took CSE in my B.Tech.Now not many years left for me before I get a clarity with my Life. Two more years &I'll finish my B.Tech and I might go for M.S in U.S(which my family is ready to arrange for)or go for a job. It is up to me to decide what to do and my family gave me enough freedom in this. Now here I go,unsure about what to do.I wish to develop a software product(say a website or an app etc.).I read some magazines, articles, blogs, websites on the business & technical aspects of such products.I just got a vague idea about them. I considered 'ethical hacking'(the thing which played a major role in making computers my interest) as my thing for some time.I learnt that careers in them are very boring in real-time and you dont have that adrenaline rush.Ofcourse, working for a company as an hacker is not something which I wished for afterall,I'm interested in hacking as it always gave me an adrenaline rush(I only know some phishing afterall!).When I looked at it as a career I didn't find it as something which would shower me with good amount of money & which would give me freedom for the rest of my life. Reading books-- A career in this field? Well,I dont think someones pays you for reading books.Even though they pay you I don't think that'll be high amounts.Blogging is something I'm interested(Haven't made a blog yet). Why I like blogging is I like to write(not bulky non-interesting stuff though!). So,I'm back to my only hope(as of now) that is developing a software product.I Read stories, artcles, everything I came across about Bill Gates,Steve Jobs,Mark Zuckerberg & many others.I understand that their aim in life was different from mine.Yet,I admire them. Now I'm not sure what to do .Learnt some programming languages.Ready to kickstart and do something in accordance with my Goal, but very much unsure of what to do.I tried but I coudn't get a clearer picture of my aim in my life. I must decide now, else,by the end of my B.tech I might well get a good job in a software company, yet not contented, satisfied with what I have & regretting for not doing anything inline with my aim in life.I might well prolong it for two more years,by going for M.S,but still same picture afterwards as well(If I don't get clarity by then). What should I do to achieve my aim in my Life??If I sound lazy, please consider that I'm not.I not a lazy one,I am full of energy and in my teens still,I'm very desirous and hungry to invest my energy, strength and work towards goal. But not sure about my path.I need help in this regard.I don't want to be a Millionaire overnight, but I want to be one gradually, only bcoz I want to eliminate money as a factor in my life(as I stated above).I want to have Freedom afterall.Freedom to do things which interest me.Freedom not to fear Mondays and Freedom to be ME! Thats it!!Well thanks for reading this. Please help me with your answers & let me get a clear view about my goal in life & about the path to build for myself. Thanks

  • Answer:

People want their life Automated! It is good to some extent, I mean who does not enjoy cars with auto-gear system, or automatic tap waters, but there is a limit to this my friend. Do you want to sit back and allow others to dictate 'how to live' to you? What to do of my life? most interesting thing you are tasked with, you want others to do for you, to "advise" you. No picking up random experiences, no doing things on instincts, no "Win/Lose/Draw, the game was awesome" attitude. I get a feeling (from your description, and question) is that you are a pampered little child, with things supposedly laid down in front of you. If you want to learn more about yourself, pick up experiences you have never had.

You sound like me, except for the chess part :) Rule money out - find out how much you need for basic needs and if your hobbies can give you that kind of money. Computers certainly can and you may become consultant / freelancer / professor instead of getting a software job which demands much more. Note that if you need every new car, mobile and other gadgets on the day they launch it, don't tread this path. You may be able to purchase those on launch day but that's a may be. Start acting today. Find what you would like to do rest of your life. It should be one thing and not everything. Now get immersed in it. Practice this one so much that you are best at it in at least 100 miles radius. Now you can give this service as consultant / freelancer / professor and you will get money. If MS in US fits in your bigger plan then do it else you can save that money for ruling out money. Work as an assistant / intern with professors / professional / senior, actually with anyone who is willing to take you. This will help you get better faster than anyone else. Do something for the society. You will be recognized. PS: The above advice was given to every Indian by Funsuk Wangdu. Only some took it. If you do not know Funsuk Wangdu, it does not matter. You can still take the advice ;)

What should you do about your career and life? Well, that is a tough one. We all think about that everyday of our lives. I do not have a concrete answer but I guess- Stay focused. Believe in yourself. There are going to be times when people tell you that you can not do something or you can't achieve something, or might just hate the way you are, but you got to believe and trust your gut. You got to hold on to your dream. Hold on to your dreams and not people. Have faith that if it is not happy, it is not the end. It is not going to be easy, but believe that a calm sea, never made a good sailor.  And just believe in - faith, hope and love! And remember- life is a lion race, just because you lost, does not mean you do not know how to ROAR!  All the best!
