Is there a way to get checked baggage fees waived for US domestic flights?
-
I have an upcoming flight on Continental and they have $25 and $32 fees for the 1st and 2nd checked bags. There are a number of conditions to get those fees waived (frequent flyer membership, military, etc) that I don't qualify for. Is there a hack that can help to get those fees waived for a regular person?

Answer:
[Sorry, the following probably is not very helpful for your situation, but maybe worth recording...] And the following applies to just Continental flights, but probably the same general ideas are true for the other big airlines. The Continental website has the summary: http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/check.aspx http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/checkbag.aspx Less obvious ways to get the fee waived include having elite frequent flyer status on Continental or any partner airline (so in this case, any Star Alliance airline, like United or US Airways) either of Continental's credit cards (which usually have an annual fee, though Continental has been waiving the first year's fee lately, probably because of the changes due to the upcoming merger) a President's Club membership (which costs something like $475/year) befriending an elite frequent flyer (even if they don't want to check your bags, if they have high enough status, their companions get free checked bags... officially it's only for companions on the same reservation, but sometimes the agents are nice about this) getting a business class seat, probably by upgrading. If you're lucky, they sometimes "sell" the upgrade at the check-in kiosk for really cheap (on the order of a few dollars, if you're super lucky).

Look for airline-branded credit cards, learn the ticket purchase rules, and save money. Or fly Southwest. :)My main airline is Delta, so I have a Delta-branded credit card. I buy my tickets via Delta's website and pay using my Delta-branded credit card. That saves me $50 per flight per person in my party in baggage fees.I also have a United-branded credit card, same story. Also, It's wise to book all travelers on a trip in the same transaction if you're using a airline-branded credit card to avoid baggage fees. I've had the Delta ticket counter staff override fees for my wife's bags when she's traveling with me but I purchased her ticket separately.
