Free VoIP and video chat services have been in place for years. They do drive down minutes of use on the voice switches at the Telecom companies. Telecom companies have been able to offset this loss in revenue by not investing in massive voice switches. All new voices switch are smaller less expensive pure VoIP switches or hybrid TDM/VoIP switches. Bandwidth is still needed to make peer to peer calls. The user pays for that bandwidth on their cable or DSL bill. The Telco's are still making money on these types of services by selling Internet bandwidth to the user instead of a voice service. The Telecom instustry has been shifting away from tradtional TDM infrastructure to an Ethernet based network for the past 5 to 7 year in response to its customers moving away from traditional voice services.
