Where to find coffee beans?

Where can you find coffee beans with the lowest mold content?

  • I'm not promoting Peete's, but I'm already using their beans just FYI.   Any other types of beans or brands with a reputation for low mold?

  • Answer:

I have read some wildly different estimates on the percentage of coffee that contains mold, and to be honest, I am not convinced it is an issue worth worrying about, unless one is especially sensitive to mycotoxins.  That said, one would do well to locate a local roaster of coffee, and buy one's coffee as fresh as possible after roasting.  This will ensure that mold spores will not have as much time to flourish, especially if the coffee is stored in an airtight container, in a cool place.  These two factors not only help combat whatever mold might be around (and it's *everywhere* even in the cleanest of kitchens), but also ensure a better cup of coffee!  Another benefit to frequenting your local roaster (or ordering from one online), is that they often roast interesting single-origin coffees that are not as commonly available, thus broadening one's coffee horizons.
