How do I start my own PR firm?

For a start up internet company with decent resources, would you go with a small, medium, or large PR firm?

While answer has a lot too it, I'll give another view: Hire a small / medium agency who knows your space and who will care. (not a big agency who won't give a damn) Make sure you get the ambitious account manager who will use your cool startup to get coverage & get kudos in the agency & earn their promotion. Treat them as part of the team Don't go with the senior guy who delegates the tasks - you want an advocate whose interests are aligned. Use them as a sounding board - the external perspective - the expert opinion from smart people in the industry who are nor insiders. This might be Account Director / Partner who know your account - but are detached (not 'your guy') and can tell you what the buzz is Use them as comporetive intelligence - their job is to know journalists, bloggers and industry news

I wouldn't go with a PR firm at all, I'd hire an in-house marketer who can double up helping you with your social media, events, etc. I have hired many PR firms over the years and in every case found the results disappointing and definitely not value for money. For $4k a month you can hire a young, hungry and talented marketing resource who will, with a lot of effort/smarts and chutzpah, get you better results than any PR agency.

Warrick's comment is right on. You might want to also consider hiring a scrappy reporter. They know how to get around obstacles and what gets good press coverage.
