This assume the HW is capable and content isn't DRM'd; if it is then the box shall have the content provider DRM integrated and integration with the content provider DRM license server (usually imply an agreement with the cp) If the box doesn't provide an internet enabled stack then real time transcoding at the head end is a possibility although non optimal In any case non trivial

I work for an IPTV company. We arrange distribution deals with the original content owner or a local distributor. They give us the right to distribute the contents in certain territories. Then we link into their systems to get a version of their channel. Sometimes we get the uncompressed version and compress it ourselves, other times we take an intermediate version called a contribution encoded feed and transcoded it for our purposes, finally we sometimes just take the stream from another network (like a satellite broadcast) and transcoded that (this is the lowest quality technique). Some IPTV box companies just link to publicly available streams but that isn't our business.
