How can I practice soccer at home?

Is a Parisian laser-bearing fan arrest at Stade de France an official responsibility, or are home crowd lasers in visiting soccer players' eyes an accepted European practice?

  • Answer:

It's not an accepted practice, anywhere, although it's happened entirely too often.  Besides shining the laser on the eyes of US goalkeeper Tim Howard, Bosnian fanatics used one on Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo during practice sessions.  These green lasers are entirely capable of overheating the central area of the retina, causing permanent damage with only brief exposure. The duty of a referee is to protect the players and deal with outside attacks on players, as well as interference in the game.  Use of a laser on a player's eyes is obvious, as can be seen in photos, and should result in immediate suspension of a game, just the way a game would be stopped when a player is hit by items thrown from the crowd.  FIFA needs to lower the boom on national federations whose fans do this, and stadium and police authorities are remiss for not stopping and arresting fans who lase a player. Tim Howard isn't too smart either, for failing to protect his eyes.  The US soccer federation and the US men's team staff are asleep at the wheel, too.
