Do people need a "reddit for videos"? New platform that you could use as an alternative to youtube's horrible interface to discover new videos and subscribe to channels?

Hi! I had an idea for a startup, I'm wondering what do you think about it. The idea is simple - "reddit for videos". The goal is to eventually build the perfect interface for discovering, watching, and subscribing to online videos. I though about it because a lot of people hate youtube, but not because it is bad at hosting videos. What if you could keep uploading your videos to youtube, but watch and discover videos by using a much superior interface and reddit's ranking/commenting system. Main advantages: - You would easily find the coolest videos, - There would be a community and high quality comments, as opposed to youtube - It would make it much easier for new youtubers to get noticed. - Interface would be elegant, beautiful, and customizable. (the way you want youtube to be) How it works: - You submit your channel, and all of your new videos will automatically appear on the website. People will see them in the feed, rank them, comment on them. - You will be able to watch video right in the feed, without needing to click-through, you will also be able to use vimeo, wistia, or whatever you prefer to host your videos. - There will be 'subreddits' - communities around interests, that will make it easier to find what you want to watch. - You would be able to build your own customizable channel page, edit css, etc. You would be able to subscribe to people's playlists and channels. What do you think? Would you use that? What would you want to see in such website?

Answer:
Aside from 's good suggestions, my opinion is I probably wouldn't use it if it didn't have a real-name requirement (like Quora) and visible downvotes (unlike Quora). Using "reddit's ranking/commenting system" is a terrible idea because people upvote/downvote/comment for petty reasons all the time. Quora's system is only marginally better than Reddit's. You would need the same or even more moderator input than Quora. For example, if it weren't for being handpicked as a "Top Writer" and being allotted all the ego-stroking that goes along with the title, I likely would have left Quora long ago due to all the usual Internet pettiness and spite.

Sounds very interesting to me, even though I see a few practical/technical issues that you need to take into account. Some thoughts: You need to put a lot of thought in how you're going to organize videos, so you can offer videos that suit a member's interests. In other words: you need to be able to identify what kind of video it is, even if the creator is sloppy with the meta-data. If people need to sign up for your website first, you have to put a lot of effort into getting the site off the ground. At first, there won't be a lot of content, or very mediocre content. Projects like this attract a lot of fortune-seekers with less-than-average content. The rating system might help with that, but 90% of the videos won't be that good. It's very, very hard to find the true gems. How are you going to ensure those high quality comments? It would be nice to have some interfacing between YouTube and your website. For example: ratings that are given on your site could be automatically turned into likes on YouTube. Your project sounds interesting enough, though. If you manage to get this off the ground, I would definitely have a look at it. Let me know if you need help with this. I have built a website aimed at "channel discovery" before: http://www.channelcrawler.com :).
