What is a graphic depiction?

What do you think is the best depiction of Orcs or Elves for Tolkien's Middle-earth that has been created to date?

  • The most popular depictions are those of Peter Jackson, who basically ignored everything Tolkien said about Orcs and Elves out of a fear of being labeled a racist. In today's world, such fears are understandable, but reactionary, and could easily be dealt with by addressing such accusations with Tolkien's own words, and what Middle-earth is supposed to be. In my own answer, I point out the work of Tom Meier, which should have been set as The Example of any depiction of Middle-earth's races. But there are other artists who have created depictions of the different races of Middle-earth: John Howe, Alan Lee, the Hilderbrants, etc. Even Lee and Howe, who were the lead Artists for Peter Jackson did not see their depictions of Orcs on the silver Screen, and their depictions of Elves only partially made it onscreen (neither would depict Elves with Crooked Swords, sharing my, and Tolkien's, belief that Elves used straight, double-edged, cruciform swords; that a crooked sword was a depiction of the character of the race using it: crooked, bent, warped, wrong).

  • Answer:

Since the question details have been edited... I'd have to join the Tom Meier crowd, as they seemed most faithful to Tolkein's descriptions.
