How to connect Android app to App engine?

What can you do with Google App Engine?

  • I am trying to implement an app with a stable back-end that I can ultimately use to host user generated content on. The problem I have found is that most places you ask questions, you get shot down with a cheesy answer such as "to broad of a topic" or "not the right place to ask this". Has anyone successfully implemented Google App Engine and Google Cloud SQL with an Android Client? The functionality of the app that I am trying to design primarily relies on users being able to generate content (Text and Pictures) and share it with their friends. This means that all users of the app should be able to connect with the Database to register a username of sorts, and build a friends list. Just trying to get a little more information to see that what Google is offering is in fact a decent fit for my needs. Thank you.

  • Answer:

GAE provides an impressive set of services that may be quite useful to quickly build up most frontend services. If there is significant backend processing involved, there is a newer offering Google Compute Engine that might fit your requirements more. [http://stackoverflow.com/a/3268143/230219] lists some of the case studies about things deployed on GAE. The idea that you have mentioned is definitely feasible on App Engine; I am pretty confident that services of similar functionality and difficulty might already exist on it.
