Why doesn't the Android Playstore check the amount of space required to install an application before allowing you to download the application and then failing to install because of lack of sufficient space?

Please don't bother answering if you don't have an intelligent, technical answer. "Because it's dumb" is not an intelligent anwer. All basic operating systems have the ability to verify the amount of space required to install an application prior to installing.

Indeed it's a basic necessity to check the amount of storage space left before installing an app. Now let's get to the technical implementation of storage in Android. Android is basically an unbound, limitless, wild OS. In this regard, even when you're running out of space it will keep warning you about the amount of space left. It is expecting that you'll add an external storage in the form of microSD card or USB drive using OTG. Also, it's giving you a chance to free up space while the app downloads by deleting other files. We can also partially or completely shift apk + data to the external memory so we're free to do that also. It may sound crazy but the storage in Android has never been limited at it's core, it can mount or accept partitions on the fly. That's the true multitasking at both hardware and software level. Also now we have certain options to pause or stop downloads from Google Play that further increases the possibility of space being available. All these possibilities till now allowed for the apps to be downloaded irrespective of the space left. Hope they add a blocking system for this in the next version.
