What is Pebble Beach like?

What re advantages and disadvantages of living in Pebble Beach?

  • I am considering moving to Pebble Beach as a retirement home, but I know little about it.  I do love the Monterey Peninsula, and someone suggested Pebble Beach.  Are there any stores there or is all shopping in Monterey/Pacific Grove?

  • Answer:

We live in Monterey.  It's more gritty and, to us, much more alive.  Pacific Grove is very attractive and a wonderful place to live. Pebble Beach and Carmel are pricey and exude a sense of exclusivity.   Checkpoints are needed to get into Pebble Beach.  That may mean security, but to us it's somewhat off-putting.  Carmel is attractive, but it's very touristy and has very little in the way of genuine useful stores.  The shopping centers (Barnyard, Crossroads) across Highway 1 do have some helpful stores.

To answer directly, no there are no shops or stores in Pebble beach aside from the county club. It is not too far out of the way to get to Camel for hippie shopping or Pacfic Grove. I would reccommend Pebble Beach over Carmel as Carmel is much more cut-off, narrow streets for access and limited for basic needs (grocery stores, gas stations etc.)
