What are hedge funds?

What hedge funds / banks highly value their developers and treat them as rocks stars?

  • This is a follow up question to: Since most hedge funds and investment banks see the traders as being the most important employees, are there (and if so, what are they) any hedge funds / banks that value their developers as much as traders?

  • Answer:

    I am not speaking from experience because I work at a non-quantitative hedge fund. However, based on my reading, I believe developers are generally not given much respect at investment banks. They seem to be treated as "nerds" and are ostracized. I think the exception would be Goldman Sachs, which historically operated much more like a hedge fund than a bank. Other hedge funds that highly value developers would likely include Renaissance, DE Shaw, and Citadel, among many others.

Its quite impossible for banks or hedge funds to treat generic developers as rock stars. Simply because you do not bring in the Money. Developers only treated nicely in teams which makes money for the firm. This is true for all industry, not just in finance. For example, Google has country specific solutions engineers that helps outside customers implement and integrate their products within their company. These engineers are seen as a supporting role and not given as much compensation as engineers in SV
