What kind of RAM do I need for a white MacBook?

What kind of RAM does my unibody MacBook (non-Pro) require?

  • I'm wanting to upgrade my RAM. Note, this is the unibody aluminum Macbook that was made for a short time in (I think) 2008. Here are stats from System Profiler: Model Name: MacBook Model Identifier: MacBook5,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 3 MB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: MB51.007D.B03

  • Answer:

For any RAM upgrades, I suggest using http://www.crucial.com. I used to buy memory upgrades through Amazon, but I would up buying higher capacity chips than my older Macbook Pro (with Core CPU) could actually support. The scanner at Crucial gives you everything you need to know.

Your MacBook5,1 machine takes DDR3-1066 RAM (PC3-8500) SODIMMs.  Apple officially says it takes a maximum of 4 GB of memory http://support.apple.com/kb/SP584, however with an EFI firmware upgrade 1.14 http://support.apple.com/kb/dl974 it is actually capable of taking 8 GB of memory  http://www.iclarified.com/entry/comments.php?enid=14153#commentsanchor
