Software Testing Certifications?

Which "secure coding" or "software security" or "security testing" certifications provide a significant boost in terms of career growth?

  • Which ones are desirable from the industry point of view? How are the job opportunities in this field?

  • Answer:

If you were the hiring manager and you presented with two candidates, which would choose: Candidate A: Certification from Sun on Software Security in Java Candidate B: Heavy contributer to the OpenSSL project I think most people would choose B as the time is well spent, there is a network effect there and the candidate is passionate about what they do.  They look at their skills as more than a job but as a craft.

I talk w/ a lot of engineers, technical managers, CTOs, HR, etc.  I've never had a manager ask that the candidates (software engineers/web devs) have certain certs, whether it's Sun, Zend or whatever.  It doesn't appear to hurt, but as Russell writes, a contributor to projects is going to be a lot more appealing than someone who took a certification course--reflects a higher level of commitment and interest.  From what I've seen, it seems like certs are far more important in the IT (systems/network) world.

The value of a certification depends on the job market you are in. Certifications do not help you do your job better, but they may help you get a better job. It is generally agreed that certifications will only really help when the hiring is done by a non-technical person.
