What are good colleges for both engineering and law?

I have a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from NIT. I now have 6 years of experience in the power sector. Now I want to get a degree in law. What are some good colleges in India to get a degree in law? What is the scope of career aspects after getting a degree in law?

  • Answer:

I would suggest a 3 year LLB course at one of the reputed traditional universities' law colleges, depending on where you're from. Eg: if you're from Calcutta, the Calcutta University Department of Law, if you're from Delhi, Campus Law Centre, Delhi University etc. The National Law Universities have only 5 year integrated degree courses, so I wouldn't recommend that since you already have a graduate degree. As for scope, beyond the obvious field of practicing as an advocate in Court, you could join a corporate law firm, or work as a company's in-house General Counsel. Or, you could continue working and later practice law after retirement. There really isn't much else in this field.

lets clarify a few things: 1. You can not go to an NLU - it is out of the question due to age restrictions. 2. You can do a 3 year LLB from a boring college, mostly wasting your time in class because you are unlikely to learn anything there except some sections and case laws - and how to crack law exams by mugging up hundreds of pages of 'notes'. Then you can call yourself a lawyer, write a very easy bar exam (for most people, but 33% still fail it - difficult to explain why) and join the bar to practice. Chances of landing a job at this stage is kind of remote, especially with law firms not hiring much, even from NLUs. If you are stellar and perform extraordinarily well at internships, you can hope for a job that will pay anywhere between INR 25,000 to INR 90,000 (going close to the upper limit is very unusual). Companies rarely hire freshers (you will be fresher as a lawyer) because they know little legal work. You have a better chance of landing a job with a lawyers chamber as a junior, who is likely to pay you not more than INR 15000 a month. From there, you make your name and start getting your own clients a few years down the line and may do very well if you learn the ropes well. This is not very appealing to most professionals already employed. 3. You just want a degree - so that you can say you are a lawyer. This makes sense, people will respect you at your job more and you may be able to help with legal strategy which is a rare skill. You will not learn anything practical in law college, but you can read on to the internet and ask other lawyers and figure stuff out over time by yourself. 4. You can do a diploma or Master of Business laws in distance mode from NUJS and NLS, which will save you time and expense and is still better legal education available in India. With this online course: http://startup.nujs.edu you will learn practical aspects of business laws that you can apply to your day to day business. The course is taught by top industry leaders, with a significant transfer of industry knowledge, making it very interesting for people who want more than just a paper certificate. I can not say the same thing for the NLS MBL course, it is again very theoretical and very boring, and has not been updated in years. The MBL exam is very difficult (below 10% pass rate) and many people give up reading the study material beyond a few pages due to the complexity of language. Full disclosure: I am one of the founders of iPleaders which builds online legal courses for professionals and students and this course http://startup.nujs.edu is a JV between http://NUJS.edu  and http://ipleaders.in.

You may try for LLB(IPR) from IIT Kharagpur that admits BTech, MSc, MBA, MBBS for this course.
