Can date ID3 tags be used to distinguish between date of album release, date of recording and date of composition?
-
It seems date of album release is the default use currently, but what if you have a recording from 1969 of a composition written in 1843 that was released on CD in 2005? All three dates are meaningful.

Answer:
In the ID3v2.3 spec (the most commonly used version these days) there are two fields for communicating dates: TORY: Original release year TYER: Year In this case I would assign them as follows: TORY: 1969 TYER: 2005 There are no pre-set fields for original composition date, but you could use your own tag for this: TXXX: Description: Composition date Value: 1843 Source: http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0
