  • Answer:

I'd go with 3 things I value most, and hope will take root: National Cohesion: Tribalism really drags us down big time. Everytime I try to speak against it i'm normally labelled naive. I believe we can live without since it happens to crop up during every decision making process. When someone has an idea that either requires certain policies implemented or financial backing, among the first questions to be asked in whispers is 'Which tribe is he/she from'. If the tribe is unfavored you're just hit with the good old Application Declined. And that's how the country wastes ideas. Infrastructure: The country is lagging when it comes to the infrastructure at our disposal. We only recently acquired a sizable chunk of reliable internet from SEACOM's undersea fibre cable, and only recently did we develop a liking for highways and superhighways. A couple of policies have changed towards favoring infrastructure, but I believe we have more to achieve. I like what Alfred Mutua is doing with Machakos, in that it might become the next Las Vegas a few years down the line. Accountability: Our political representatives are notorious for their desire to embezzle funds. They previously used to get away with it easy, but nowadays it's not as easy. It still happens though, which is why I think a lot can still be done towards stemming this. We need less white elephants.

Vision 2030 assumes growth of 10% every year for the next 20 years. Given that Kenya has not yet had one year of 10% growth and so has already fallen behind schedule, and that the only (non resource based) economy in the world to get this kind of growth in recent years is the highly-infrastructured, highly industrialised, highly organised, highly skilled economy of China, its an open question as to how realistic this target really is. Arguably it may be more realistic for government to target a date in which it can meet the requirements of an economy that aims to start growing at 10% a year.
