Concerning high-production concerts put on by high-profile bands, how many people generally make a cut from ticket sales? (or prosper indirectly)
-
I saw Green Day play live and their tremendous show made me wonder, who generally makes money off of these expensive-looking concerts? I mean EVERYONE involved. Audio engineers, stunt technicians, people who create/dismantle the stage, general roadies, people involved with lighting, people who create and people who display the visuals going on in the background....even security at the venue and people pouring drinks, if you feel so inclined to go that far. If I wanted to convince someone that a $70 concert ticket is not going directly to the band and their label, and back it up using loose statistics regarding how many jobs are actually being created because this show is taking place, what kind of information could you share regarding that matter? Again, I mean everyone. The guy driving their bus(ses) counts.

Answer:
Start with the band and their management, agents, lawyers, accountants, family members. Then add everyone working at the venue from ushers, ticket takers, janitors, employees and executives. Then add the promoter and it's executives and employees. Then add everyone in the crew from sound and lights, stagehands, catering, drivers, costumers, as well as performers like backup singers and dancers and musicians. Then add hotel staff and local restaurants. Add the people from the merchandising company and the road crew selling shirts and other merch along with all the people who make the merrch worldwide. Add the songwriters who make money from the live performances. Add the parking attendants, security, and even all the bootleggers and scalpers. by the time your are done, there are hundreds of people involved and making money from live shows.

What Gary said is right... there are lots of different people making money from the sale of concert tickets. Following is a per-ticket snapshot of some of the cost centers involved (a mix of local show expenses and touring expenses), based on an actual tour business plan. Assumes a $100.00 average ticket price, touring theaters in North America for about 10 weeks. Note that the vast majority of expenses are fixed and do not go up or down based on how many tickets are sold. The big drivers of the expenses are number of shows and number of weeks on the road...plus of course the scale and scope of the production. This is only meant to be an example. Certain confidential/proprietary expense lines were removed, as well as 64 line items that fell under $1.00 per ticket.
